Waqar Appointed Pakistan Coach

The Pakistan Cricket Board have confirmed that Waqar Younis has replaced Intikhab Alam as coach of the national team.

Former captain and fast bowler Waqar becomes his country's fourth coach in three years and has been given the job through to the 2011 World Cup.

The PCB decided to make changes following Pakistan's winless tour of Australia, Mohsin Khan having also replaced Iqbal Qasim as chief selector.

"Mr Waqar Younis has been appointed the national coach with immediate effect," PCB chairman Ijaz Butt told the Hindustan Times.

"He is in Australia at the moment and is expected to come down very soon. We hope to see some change in Pakistan cricket.

"He (Waqar) will continue until the 2011 World Cup. We are in no hurry to make changes if the team performs well. Hopefully, he will do well."
Experience

Waqar took 373 wickets for Pakistan in 87 Tests and 416 scalps in 262 one-day internationals between 1989 and 2003, forming a formidable partnership with fellow paceman Wasim Akram.

The 40-year-old, who has had two spells as a specialist bowling coach with his country, will head to Lahore next week to begin his new role ahead of Pakistan's defence of their World Twenty20 crown in the Caribbean in April and May.

Former coach Intikhab will remain involved with the PCB, although Butt did not want to go into detail as to why he was relieved of his duties as coach.

"Let's keep that topic aside," he said. "We are trying to move forward.

"He (Intikhab) is still with us. He will be in charge of all cricket academies and coaching in Pakistan."
