Jets Set Jones Free

The New York Jets plan to release running back Thomas Jones prior to the start of the NFL's free agency period on Friday.

Jones, 31, is coming off a season in which he set career highs of 1,402 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns and helped the Jets, who had the league's top-ranked running attack, reach the AFC title game.

He was due a $3.3 million roster bonus and attempts to restructure his contract have proved unsuccessful.

"Thomas joined us three years ago and has been a productive, passionate leader both on and off the field who has served as a positive influence for our younger players," said Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum in a statement.

"We were fortunate to acquire Thomas and wish him the best."

Jones was the seventh overall selection in the 2000 draft and has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and New York Jets during his 10 seasons in the professional ranks. He is currently 28th on the NFL's all-time career rushing list with 9,217 yards.

His departure leaves Shonn Greene, the Jets' third-round pick last year, and Leon Washington - currently recovering from a broken leg - to compete for the starting job next season.
Pace released

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears have released offensive tackle Orlando Pace after one injury-plagued season.

Pace, 34, was a seven-time Pro Bowler during his time with the St Louis Rams but failed to produce his best form as Chicago struggled to a 7-9 record and missed the play-offs.

The Bears have also released tight end Fontel Mines and guard Tyler Reed.
